This Friday, the Office of Undergraduate Research will hold an awards ceremony in the Mary and John Gray Library for the winners of the Undergraduate Research Spring Expo.

Every semester, the Undergraduate Research Expo is held, in which students of various majors have the opportunity to present their research projects. An informal brown bag lunch meeting is typically held a few weeks before the Expo to introduce the students’ topics to professors and students in the presenters’ department.

“(We want) students to be engaged with activities that relate to what we teach and what students have an interest in, and we love being able to showcase the work students are doing,” Professor Tony DeMars said about the brown bag lunch meeting for the Department of Communications and Media.

The awards involved in presenting at the Undergraduate Research Expos include awards of recognition for research projects in different fields, including non-major fields such as gender and sexuality, as well as cash prizes for student films and other projects.

“I’ll be presenting the two (it was a tie) top gender/sexuality awards to Halli Blank and Alexa Heng,” Professor Favors stated in an email. “Both are non-major/minors and Reaud Honors students. They will also be at the Lavender Award Luncheon.”

Nederland senior film major Benjamin Porter will also be given two awards and $200 in cash for each: one for his film “Undivided Interests” which he presented during a film panel at the Expo, and one for his presentation on the 1984 parody advertisement Epic Games, Inc. released in 2020, declaring their lawsuit against Apple, Inc.

“Whatever you think about Apple’s 1984 ad, there were huge effects after its release,” Porter said. “For one, they broke up the monopoly IBM held over the computer market, and it was the starting point for what Apple is today. That kind of effect is essentially what Epic Games is aiming for.”

Blank, Heng, Porter, and other presenters from various majors will be present at the awards ceremony, which will be held on the eighth floor of the Mary and John Gray Library.
