Shelby Green is a junior communications major with a focus in advertising from Vidor, Texas. She is a determined and honest person, who just might be famous one day.
Green is a youth cheerleading coach who is currently spending her second semester at Lamar University Beaumont, having done her prerequisites online at Lamar State College Orange.
“I’ve been a cheerleader all my life, competitively and in high school,” Green said. “Competitively, that was like my real hobby, what I loved to do.”
Currently, Green coaches two separate teams: One of six to ten year olds, and one of 11 to 15 year olds. However, in academics, Green decided to pursue advertising instead. Choosing this direction, though, was no easy feat.
“At first, I went with dental hygiene, right out of high school,” Green said. “Then I went to one observation day at my local dentist, and I never went back. So I changed from that to a business degree, but I didn’t know what to use it for. I thought about general engineering, but then again, I’m not really good at math. But then I saw a video of influencers talking about advertising, and thought, ‘Maybe I could do that.’”
While unsure of an exact plan after obtaining her degree, Green plans on pursuing a remote job advertising for various businesses on social media. She is also open to the idea of social media advertising through “influencing,” or endorsing certain products or services through her personal social media accounts, while also making vlogs, posts, or other content related to her daily life. In fact, her peers may have predicted her future in this line of work.
“When we were young, my best friend would say, ‘You’re going to be famous one day,’ and I would be like, ‘Uh, me?’” Green said. “She would say, ‘I don’t know, I just feel like you’re going to be famous.’”
In terms of friends, one of Green’s strongest personal values is maintaining honesty and trust in her relationships.
“I’m very passionate about honest people,” Green said. “I don’t like fake people. Even if you think it’s going to hurt my feelings, I’d rather you tell me the truth. Will it hurt my feelings in the moment? Probably, but I’m going to have more respect for you.”
