For our fourth assignment, we were supposed to create a poster and flyer for the same event.
I decided to design a poster/flyer in Canva for an open mic night at The End, a hardcore punk club in Houston. Punk is a very political music genre, and I wanted to emphasize that a lot in my poster. I used Lilya Brik’s iconic photo as a reference to Soviet propaganda, conveying that this is a leftist punk club. The textbox “Be the voice of the people!” has a double meaning, both to encourage people to literally use their voice in music, and to figuratively use their voice in politics. Finally, I kept it simple and to the point, using a geometric font against a red background so that the information on when and where the open mic night was happening was legible.

To improve on this poster, I made the red a darker shade to decrease eyestrain and I changed the font of the speech bubble and the information so it was easier to read. I decided to use a handwriting font to invoke a homemade feeling and to make the information more legible.
